Although I do consume fresh green juices during spring and summer. I’m not the biggest advocate of drinking juices everyday due to many reasons and the wisdom I have behind it and also having working as head Nutritionist on a juice retreat in 2013! I’ve tried so many juices to date that are NOT 100% to my liking. I avoid ready prepared juices & fruit juice and they don’t satisfy my appetite. My personal preference is to eat my green veggies raw and slightly cooked carrots and beetroot rather than to juice them. However with kale I am happy to juice this or blend it into a smoothie.
As the weather is getting warmer & spring is just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to start supporting our liver health & boosting the body’s natural detoxification. There is a place of juices as part of a healthy balanced diet. My blog post posed a few years ago on juicing outlines some of the many health benefits of juicing. There’s no point in over consuming processed foods, drinking alcohol, smoking, coffee and caffeinated energy drinks and then going back to juicing. If you are serious about your health then you have to reduce and cut back foods which make the liver work harder than it needs too. Juicing doesn’t work on its own. They are to be had in conjunction with a healthy balanced diet. Juices should not replace meals either! So consuming them before meals and in between meals is fine. If you want to go on a juice fast, then please please seek the advice of a nutritionist. I would never advise anyone to skip meals and each individual’s diet is different.
Green juices that are low in fruit sugars are a great way to cleanse and you nourish yourself with vitamins, minerals & live enzymes! Great for energy, mood, skin health, eyesight, red blood cells and every other cell in the body. My previous blog post on juicing published in 2016 outlines some of the benefits: https://www.synergynutrition.co.uk/juice-your-way-to-vibrant-health/
This is my morning green juice. I conjured my own recipe & turned out to be guess what? They are 100% to my liking. Tastes divine and has been a hit with everyone I have shared with it including my friends, family and clients.
RECIPE: 1 large glass of juice. Increase quantity for more servings. Of course you may juice other green veggies like celery, coriander, etc.
- 3 cups of kale
- 2 apples or 1 apple & 1 pear – both variations are very tasty
- a chunk of cucumber
- small piece of ginger
TIPS:
- Drink the green juice on an empty stomach. 30 mins before food. Not with food. 1 glass is enough.
- 1 to 2 pieces of fruit in the juice is more than enough. Your taste buds will adapt gradually.
- Not a meal replacement. It’s a juice so pre meal or as a snack. If you want to consider juice fasting seek advise from a nutritionist like myself first. Don’t start juice fasting without professional advice. I would never advise anyone to skip meals.
- Fresh is best, make little & often. Drink within 20 mins to gain maximum goodness as the enzymes deplete after.
